WONDERFUL NEWS, ST SYLVESTERS CHURCH HAS BEEN GRANTED £384,300.00 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, for the Church renovation and Community project.

St Sylvester's Church is a very friendly Medieval church situated in an isolated rural community. The Church is always open and everyone is welcome to one of our services or just to visit.  Chivelstone holds weekly Sunday services and an occasional fifth Sunday Benefice Service.

Chivelstone Church is early 15c with a carved medieval screen and pulpit. The rood screen is unusual in having paintings of Saints in the middle section and arabesques on the outer sections, (before and after the Reformation.  Recently we have found wall paintings. This is very exciting, we shall endeavour to complete revealing them.

We are applying for a National Heritage Lottery Grant to repoint the tower and parts of the main walls, renew and enlarge the gutters and improve the drainage to keep the Church dry. The front wall of the porch is unstable and the vestry wall is in need of repair. We hope to install a toilet and new kitchen in an area at the back of the Church. We will remove some of the pews at the back of the Church to make a Community area. This is a major restoration and renovation project for our very small Parish of Chivelstone.

Our National Lottery Heritage grant was submitted at the end of February,  we hope we will be successful, the amount of restoration that is required is impossible to fund by our small Parish.  We hope you will visit one day.

If you would like to see a video of our Church go to East Prawle History Society website which includes the video and many photographs of the Church and our video presentation for our National Lottery Heritage Fund grant application.

If you would like to donate to our funds and help us restore our beautiful ancient Church, please contact the Churchwarden on 01548511332, email [email protected], our small Parish needs a lot of support to help us restore and renovate our beautiful Church.
